WEST VIRGINIA FLOOD RECOVERY WORK 2010

Many people in southern West Virginia have had major flooding.  It is
likely that four counties will be  declared disaster areas.  While it
is too early to have exact numbers, It appears that 500 families have
either had major damage to their homes, or had their homes washed away.

An invitation has been extended for both ERT and regular UMVIM teams.

1.  The initial stage of volunteer work would be to have teams come to
help the families mud out their homes.  This will likely be the plan
for several weeks, if not months.
2.  Longer term rebuild teams would be welcome to come to southern
West Virginia.

It is best for anyone interested to contact the following:

International Mission Trips

HAITI VIM TRIP

There are openings on a scheduled August 17-25, 2010 UMVIM Team to Haiti, coordinated by the Alabama-West Florida Conference.  The team will be lead by Rev. John Fox, Auburn UMC, Auburn, Alabama, who has extended experience in Haiti.  If you know of someone, particularly a potential team leader, who is looking for a team, please have them contact Glenn Glover ASAP.

The cost will be $655 per person plus airfare (currently $595 from Atlanta to Port au Prince), plus we ask that your church provide $350 towards the required $3500 project costs required for each team.  UMCOR is matching the $3500 donation, so that $7000 will actually be available for use in Haiti.  $500 deposit is required with applicaton.

The team plans to purchase individual airline tickets (as opposed to group tickets).  Once the team is set and the airline schedule is determined, you will be responsible for purchasing your airline ticket to match the airline schedule for the AWF team, if possible (AWF team will fly from Atlanta to Miami to Port au Prince -- hopefully on the same day).  If not possible, or substantially cheaper, you must plan to arrive in/depart from Haiti on the same day as the AWF team to accommodate transportation in Haiti.  Some flight schedules require an overnight stay in Miami or if we leave early, you may want to overnight in Atlanta.

Please email Glenn Glover at

Mississippi Tornado Cleanup

The Mississippi Conference received significant damage during April's tornadoes and most recently from last week's tornadoes and flooding.  We are in need of teams for a recovery that will take several months to one year minimum.

Teams are needed throughout the state for debris removal, flood cleanup and construction.

Below is a listing of places in need of assistance along with contact information:

Yazoo City
Debris removal is being coordinated through the MCVS VRC located at the DRC in the National Guard Armory in Yazoo City.  There is a site to host teams already and we will be opening a site projected operational in two weeks.

This present operational site is provided through a VOAD partner the Episcopal Church, and has a capacity of 100 and is already in operation.

Camp Swayze (Boy Scout Camp)
1655 County Barn Rd
Yazoo City
Contact Person: Butch Jones, Cell# 228-234-5169

Ebenezer
There is a VRC, volunteer reception center, located at the VFD in Ebenezer.  They have presently close to 100 work orders.  This is within 20 miles of Yazoo City and is serviceable from the host sites there.

Mill Springs
Debris removal is needed in this area and is being coordinated from Mill Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

Weir
Debris removal is needed and is being coordinated from the DRC located at the Gymnasium at Weir.

Corinth
Relief efforts are presently coordinated from the Crossroads Arena.  The needs are for flood clean up.  There is a question as to who, what and how.
74 rental units were impacted which are rental assisted.  There is a possibility that this is contaminated by raw sewage and will be deemed hazardous waste.  Volunteers will need to check before responding.

Walnut
As of yesterday there were 35 needs identified for debris removal in the Brownfield area.  This is being coordinated from Harmony Baptist Church by MCVS.  Harmony Baptist is located just north of highway 72 on highway 15.

Ashland
Debris removal is needed at Ashland and the response is being coordinated from a facility located at the crossroads of old highway 370 and new highway
370.

Abbeville
Debris removal is needed in the Abbeville area and this is being coordinated by Rev. Jim Peterman phone # 662-816-3985.

Note that there will be an ERT training May 15th at Wheeler UMC.

UPCOMING EVENTS

JULY 17 and 19-24, 2010                                      LOCK HAVEN, PA

The Protestant Campus Ministry (PCM) at Lock Haven University has just acquired a house adjacent to the campus that will be utilized as a safe haven for students and a place for them to gather with fellow Christians. Our projects will be outside and include house painting, spouting cleaning, tree removal, tree and shrubbery trimming, deck rebuilding, taking apart and removing a swing set, cement work, building a picnic table and whatever else we identify that is needed. The house is at 110 Akeley Lane.  When you get off the Lock Haven exit from Rt. 220, go north on Jay St. (get in the left lane).  Go to Water St.; turn left.  At the end of Water St., you'll come to a T- intersection (the Durrwachter Conference Center will be on the right).  Turn left at the light on N. Fairview.  The second right after that turn will be Akeley Lane.  The PCM House is the first white house on the left immediately behind Sloan Fine Arts Building. Because we’ll be commuting on a daily basis, this is a great opportunity for those of you have off on Saturdays to join us.  You can work one day or the entire time. (I doubt that we will need the entire week, however.) PLEASE CONTACT US IF YOU ARE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE.

AUGUST 14, 2010     WILLIAMSPORT DISTRICT VIM REUNION

If you have travelled with us on any of our journeys or volunteered on one of our local projects, or if you just want to learn more about VIM, please join us for this event. Spouses—this might be a chance to find out more about what really happens on our journeys and meet the people you have heard so much about!  We will meet at our home at 1253 Deerfield Drive, Williamsport, for a picnic, and will plan to eat at 1:00 pm. We will provide the burgers, dogs, rolls, condiments and drinks. Please bring a dish to share and your suit if you want to swim.  This will be a great opportunity to share our stories and photos. PLEASE LET US KNOW BY AUGUST 7, IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND. Call for directions.

Volunteers In Mission Opportunities

  • Individual Volunteers - Individual voluteers, either single or as married couples, are needed for short term projects.  The usual length of service is from two months to two years.  The individual volunteer is expected to cover the cost of transportation and personal expenses in the place of assignment.  Because they are viewed as missionaries by the host community, the individual volunteer should possess a growing Christian faith and understandin of mission.  Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills are of great benefit.
  • Work Teams - Ten to twelve persons from a local church, district, or conference commit themselves to work on a construction project in a mission setting (usually a church, school or clinic building).
  • Disaster Response Teams - After a major disaster such as a flood, hurricane or earthquake, volunteer teams initially respond to help with clean-up and assessment, and over the long term assist in reconstruction of damaged areas.
  • Medical Teams - Teams of physicians, dentists, and other medical personnel serve one to three weeks in places where medical attention is needed.  Medical personnel may also accompany a work team.
  • United Methodist Fellowship of Health Care Volunteers (UMF/HCV) - United Methodist Fellowship of Health Care Volunteers invites health care professionals and other interested individuals to nurture and witness their Christian faith through ministries of healing of body, mind and spirit, as servants of Christ, providing health care to a world in need.  Our membership includes health professionals, counselors, pastors, administrators, and others who may wish to participate as valued members of our health care teams.
  • NOMADS (Nomads on a Mission Active in Divine Service) (www.nomadsumc.org) - About 1,100 members of the United Methodist Church's NOMADS travel across the United States, repairing homes for needy families and doing renovation at churches, schools and community centers.  Most are retirees who travel in their recreational vehicles.  Money for the materials used on NOMADS projects comes from the group's fund-raising efforts and contributions from churches and other organizations.  Last year, NOMADS worked on 121 three-week projects from South Carolina to California.  Based on $13.50 for each volunteer hour, their work totals $1.6 million in donated labor.
  • Lend-a-Hand Mission (www.lendahandmission.com) - Lend A Hand coordinates reliable transportation, labor, housing and meals for volunteers who want to help those who have lost homes or are suffering extraordinary hardship as the result of a disaster.

Mission Ambassadors

Mission Ambassadors are clergy and/or Laity selected to participate in a mission study tour to the geographical area featured in that year's Schools of Christian Mission.  These persons then serve as resource persons to the conference for that study.
